Gunmen kill 5, burn homes, abduct residents in Niger community

Chaos erupted in the Baga community of Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State, as suspected terrorists killed at least five people, abducted several residents, and set multiple homes ablaze in a brazen attack on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses said more than 160 armed men stormed the village in the early hours, using explosives to destroy properties and force villagers to flee.

“More than 160 terrorists attacked Baga early this morning, burning houses with explosives.

”As of this evening, the entire community is engulfed in flames with thick smoke rising,” one resident, who requested anonymity, told Channels Television.

The attack left local vigilante groups struggling to defend the community.

Eight members of the vigilante sustained injuries while attempting to repel the heavily armed assailants and are currently receiving treatment at a medical facility.

Sources revealed that the attackers had previously raided nearby Nada village, rustling cattle before moving into Baga.

Security forces have been deployed to the area to restore order, although the Niger State Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the incident.

Residents expressed fear and shock as they continue to count losses, with many displaced by the violence.

The incident underscores the growing security challenges in Niger State and highlights the urgent need for coordinated action to protect vulnerable communities in the region.

Authorities have appealed to residents to remain calm and report any suspicious activities, while security agencies intensify efforts to track the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.

The Baga attack comes amid rising insecurity across northern Nigeria, with communities increasingly targeted by armed groups using explosives and overwhelming firepower.
