Rivers police arrest suspect over kidnapping, rape case

The Police Command in Rivers State has arrested a 24-year-old man over alleged involvement in kidnapping and rape in the state.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, told journalists in Port Harcourt on Sunday that the arrest followed a complaint filed by a young woman.

Agabe said the victim reported that she was abducted and taken to a bush area in Ulakwo, Etche Local Government Area, where she was assaulted, raped, and robbed of her personal belongings.

She added that the victim, who was later released by her attacker, reported the incident to the police on Saturday.

According to her, operatives of the command immediately launched an investigation using technology-driven tracking methods after receiving the complaint.

“This led to the arrest of the suspect who later confessed to the crime,” she said.

Agabe further disclosed that exhibits recovered from the suspect included a mobile phone, a wig believed to belong to the victim, and other personal items.

She noted that efforts were ongoing to track down other members of the gang who are currently at large, adding that the suspect would be charged to court after investigations are concluded.

The police spokesperson also advised members of the public to be cautious when interacting with strangers online, especially when arranging physical meetings.

“It is important to inform your friends and family of your movement, verify identities before physical meetings, and report suspicious situations promptly to the police,” she advised.
