APGA unveils 2026 primary election timetable

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has officially released its provisional schedule for the 2026 party primaries, setting the stage for the 2027 general elections with detailed timelines, procedures, and fees for aspirants seeking elective positions under the party.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ejimofor Opara, the party said the timetable was approved by its National Working Committee (NWC).
According to APGA, the exercise aligns with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines and provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
The party outlined that the sale and submission of expression of interest forms will commence on April 20 and end on May 8.
This would be followed by the screening of aspirants scheduled for May 11 for National Assembly positions, May 12 for State Houses of Assembly, and May 13 for governorship candidates.
APGA further stated that nomination forms will be on sale from May 14 to May 21.
The party’s primary elections are fixed for May 23 and would be conducted at the ward level using the Option A4 voting system, a method designed to promote transparency through open voting.
Any disputes arising from the primaries, according to the timetable, will be addressed by the party’s appeals committee on May 28.
The party also released the cost structure for aspirants across various elective offices.
Expression of interest forms are priced at N25 million for presidential aspirants, N10 million for governorship, N6 million for Senate, N4 million for House of Representatives, and N2 million for State Assembly candidates.
For nomination forms, presidential aspirants would pay N50 million, governorship N25 million, Senate N15 million, House of Representatives N12 million, and State Assembly N6 million.
This brings the total cost for presidential aspirants to N75 million.
APGA emphasised that aspirants must first obtain and submit expression of interest forms before undergoing screening, which is a mandatory step before eligibility to purchase nomination forms.
The party noted that the structured process is intended to ensure discipline, orderliness, and credibility in its candidate selection process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to the use of the Option A4 system, stating that the approach would enhance transparency, reduce internal disputes, and limit electoral manipulation within party primaries.
