Tinubu approves new police academy campus in Ogun, grants N15bn take-off fund

President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, located in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The President also sanctioned a special take-off grant of N15 billion to support the project, according to a statement released on Monday by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.

The initiative aligned with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which provides for the expansion of the academy—currently headquartered in Wudil, Kano State—into multiple campuses across the country to strengthen police training and capacity development.

Part of the funding framework indicates that the intervention will be drawn from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) 2026 allocation.

The resources are expected to support key infrastructure such as academic buildings, student accommodation, essential training equipment, and other core facilities required for effective learning and policing education.

“The intervention fund will be sourced from the TetFund 2026 allocation to finance priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets,” the statement partly read.

The choice of Erinja as the site for the new campus was reached following a high-level consultation involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

According to the Presidency, the decision was guided by considerations such as student intake capacity, funding sustainability, academic standards, and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force, which is currently undergoing expansion.

“President Tinubu believes the expansion will strengthen institutional governance, modern policing education, and national security,” the statement added.

The approval comes months after the President declared a nationwide security emergency in response to a surge in violent crimes, including kidnappings and armed attacks.

Following that declaration, he directed both the Nigeria Police Force and the military to intensify recruitment efforts.

Under the directive, the police are expected to recruit an additional 20,000 personnel to boost operational strength across the country.

In a separate statement signed by the President in November 2025, Tinubu had also approved the upgrade of police training facilities nationwide and authorised the use of several National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as temporary training depots.

He further ordered that officers previously assigned to VIP protection duties should undergo what he described as “crash training” before being redeployed to more critical security operations across the country.

At the same time, the President directed the withdrawal of police officers from VIP escort and guard duties, as part of broader reforms aimed at improving frontline policing and addressing insecurity nationwide.
