Gov. Eno marks birthday with support for orphans

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has marked his 62nd birthday by rolling out a series of welfare packages for children and caregivers in orphanages across the state, including scholarships, employment opportunities, and housing support.
The governor made the announcement during a visit to the Divine Children’s Home in Atan Offot, Uyo, where he chose to celebrate the milestone with vulnerable children rather than host a conventional event.
“We are here to encourage them and to give them hope.
”For me, this is renewed hope that they will know they are not rejected, they are not desolate; we are with them, and that gives me a happy birthday,” Eno said.
He explained that since assuming office, he has consistently dedicated his birthdays to humanitarian causes, describing service to others as a source of personal fulfilment.
Addressing the children, the governor reassured them of their worth and future potential.
“No child is born by accident. We will nurture them and help them realise their destinies,” he said, urging them to remain hopeful and focused.
As part of the intervention, Eno approved automatic employment for 22 volunteer caregivers and four additional beneficiaries into the state civil service.
He also authorised vocational training for 15 individuals at specialised centres, with starter packs to be provided upon completion.
In addition, one beneficiary, Abigail Okon Edet, was awarded an overseas postgraduate scholarship, while two graduates already employed in the civil service were granted housing support.
The governor also disclosed plans to transition some beneficiaries from orphanage care into independent living arrangements, providing them with suitable accommodation outside institutional settings.
Eno also cautioned against the unregulated establishment of orphanages, calling for stricter compliance with existing guidelines. He urged individuals and organisations to continue supporting vulnerable groups in society.
In her remarks, Helen Eno-Obareki, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, described the governor as a compassionate leader whose policies prioritise the welfare of the less privileged.
She noted that celebrating his birthday with orphaned children reflects a broader commitment to improving the lives of disadvantaged citizens across the state.
