Police disown CP over viral video remarks

The Edo State Police Command has distanced its Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, from a viral video circulating on social media in which he was seen alongside a Benin City-based comedian during what was described as an official outing.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Command clarified that comments made in the video by the comedian, Emmanuel Eghogho, also known as Egogo, were entirely personal and do not reflect the views of either the Commissioner or the police authority in the state.
The clarification followed public backlash triggered by the footage, which allegedly showed the police chief smiling while the comedian made remarks interpreted as threats against political opponents and warnings directed at certain individuals.
According to the Command, at no point did the Commissioner endorse or align himself with the statements made in the video. It added that the content is currently under review to determine whether it carries any implications beyond entertainment or showmanship.
The Command described Agbonika as a professional and non-partisan officer who remains committed to the constitutional responsibilities of the Nigeria Police Force.
It also reiterated an earlier appeal urging political actors, their supporters, and members of the public to conduct their activities peacefully and within the bounds of the law, especially amid heightened political tensions.
While affirming the right of individuals and groups to pursue legitimate political interests, the police warned against actions capable of inciting violence or disrupting public order.
“Any act of violence, incitement, thuggery, or conduct capable of undermining public peace and security will not be tolerated,” the statement said, adding that offenders would face legal consequences.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public safety, maintaining peace, and protecting democratic processes across Edo State.
