Bandit attack claims 11 lives in Katsina village

At least 11 people have been killed in a fresh bandit attack on Gurbi Village in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State, according to the state police command.

Police spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday in Katsina, noting that two other residents sustained varying degrees of injuries.

He said the attackers stormed the community at about 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, opening fire on unsuspecting villagers and killing several persons on the spot.

“The assailants fled as security forces closed in on the scene,” he stated.

According to him, a joint security response team comprising police operatives, military personnel, and other security agencies was immediately deployed after a distress call was received.

The swift intervention, he said, forced the attackers to retreat from the area.

The injured victims were evacuated to a nearby medical facility where they are currently receiving treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were later buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

Following the attack, the police command said it had reinforced security presence in the area with additional tactical deployments aimed at preventing further incidents.

Sadiq-Aliyu added that intensified patrols had been ordered, alongside improved collaboration with local communities to strengthen intelligence gathering and early warning systems.

“Efforts are ongoing to track down the perpetrators of the heinous act,” he said, urging residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security authorities.

The command assured residents that measures were being taken to restore calm and prevent a recurrence of such attacks in the affected communities.
