Police recover explosives at A’Ibom custodial centre

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom State has recovered explosive materials inside the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, in what authorities say prevented a potential security breach at the facility.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfom John, disclosed this in a statement issued in Uyo, noting that the discovery averted what could have been a serious threat to lives and critical infrastructure within the correctional centre.
According to her, the breakthrough followed credible intelligence provided by correctional authorities, who raised alarm over suspicious items noticed around the facility.
She explained that, acting on the report, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, ordered the immediate deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, BomPol Base 38, Uyo, alongside other tactical teams to secure and sanitise the area.
A coordinated search and sweep operation by the security teams reportedly led to the recovery of two 90mm high explosive rounds, as well as a 45cm length of burning fuse.
Other items recovered included one pair of pincers, a flat screwdriver, two pieces of 12mm iron chisels, and a 6cm conduit iron pipe.
“The EOD team professionally rendered the explosive devices safe, thereby neutralising any imminent threat and preventing possible loss of lives and destruction of critical infrastructure,” the statement said.
The police further confirmed that the facility and its surrounding environment have been placed under reinforced security, including increased surveillance, tighter access control, and continuous patrols aimed at preventing any further threats.
DSP John added that discreet investigations and technical analysis had commenced to trace the origin of the explosives and identify those responsible for introducing them into the custodial centre.
She reassured residents that the situation was under control and confirmed that no casualties were recorded in the incident.
The police spokesperson also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
“The command will not tolerate any attempt to undermine public safety or target critical institutions,” she warned.
She reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining security across Akwa Ibom State, stating that it remains proactive and fully prepared to protect lives and property.
