A wave of emotion and hope filled the Duke Cancer Center as Azuka Jebose completed 35 days of radiation therapy in his ongoing battle with stage 4 prostate cancer that has spread to his bones.
“A few minutes ago I completed 35 days of radiation at Duke Cancer Center — one more step in fighting stage 4 prostate cancer that spread to my bone.”
The moment marked a significant milestone in what remains a difficult and ongoing fight for survival.
At the end of treatment, medical staff gathered to celebrate with him in a cherished tradition: the ringing of the bell and presentation of a Certificate of Completion.
“When you finish radiation at Duke, the nurses and doctors gather to celebrate with you. You ring the bell and they hand you a Certificate of Completion.”
In a deeply personal and emotional moment, Azuka was joined by his daughter, who is also facing her own battle with breast cancer and has previously experienced her own bell-ringing ceremony.
“My daughter, who’s battling breast cancer and has had her own bell-ringing day, was with me to celebrate and document this moment.”
He expressed profound gratitude to the Duke Cancer Center team, as well as his family, who have stood by him through every stage of treatment.
“I’m eternally grateful to the amazing Duke team who encouraged me every single day.
”And to my wife and children, thank you for your strength, unconditional love, and for showing up through every appointment, every side effect, every hard morning, ” he said.
Despite the milestone, Azuka emphasised that the journey is far from over.
“This was vigorous treatment, but it’s not the end. It’s still a long fight for survival,” he added.
He also extended appreciation to friends and supporters who have continued to stand with him and called for continued financial support to sustain ongoing treatment and recovery efforts.
“Thank you for walking this with me, ” he said.
