Tiwa Savage, Berklee award $2m scholarships to Nigerian students

At least 18 Nigerian students have been awarded scholarships valued at more than $2 million through an initiative led by singer Tiwa Savage in partnership with Berklee College of Music, in a programme designed to expand access to global music education.

The awards were announced at the final stage of the Berklee in Nigeria programme held in Lagos, where young creatives competed for the opportunity to study at the prestigious U.S. music institution in Boston.

According to organisers, more than 2,000 applicants applied for the scheme, with 120 candidates shortlisted for an intensive four-day training camp before the final selection was made.

The successful students are expected to undertake a three-year course of study at Berklee College of Music, focusing on areas such as performance, songwriting, music production, and the business side of the entertainment industry.

Faculty members from the institution led the training sessions in Nigeria.

Tiwa Savage, who is also an alumna of Berklee, described the initiative as a step toward building stronger infrastructure for African creatives and expanding access to international opportunities.

She announced the scholarships via social media, highlighting the scale of funding and the number of beneficiaries selected.

The programme is part of a broader effort to address long-standing barriers faced by emerging African artists, particularly high tuition costs and limited access to global training platforms.

Organisers say the goal is to connect local talent with international industry networks and professional development pathways.

By supporting structured music education abroad, the initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s presence in the global music industry while creating new opportunities for young artists to develop their careers on an international stage.
