Oborevwori decries police killing, seeks justice

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has condemned the alleged killing of a defenceless youth, Mena Otidi, by a police officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, describing the act as both unwarranted and unjustifiable.

In a statement released through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor characterised the incident as “barbaric, unlawful and a grave violation of the sanctity of human life.”

Oborevwori expressed profound grief over the incident and conveyed his condolences to the family of the deceased, noting that the loss was both tragic and avoidable.

“No citizen deserves to be subjected to such brutality and death,” the governor said, stressing that safeguarding the lives of residents remains a top priority of his administration.

He commended the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, alongside the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, for what he described as their prompt disciplinary response, including the approval for dismissal and prosecution of officers implicated in the incident.

According to him, the action sends a clear message on accountability and represents a meaningful step towards rebuilding public trust in law enforcement institutions.

The governor also insisted that all officers linked to the incident, as seen in a widely circulated video, must be comprehensively investigated and prosecuted in line with the law.

“Justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done,” he emphasised.

Oborevwori also assured the bereaved family of the state government’s full backing in pursuing justice, adding that authorities would closely monitor the case until its conclusion.

He pledged that the government would leave no stone unturned in ensuring accountability, while also putting measures in place to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

The governor urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating his administration’s commitment to protecting lives, upholding the rule of law, and fostering a just and humane society.
