Delta speaker hails workers, calls for labour unity

The Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has congratulated Nigerian workers as they join the rest of the world to mark the 2026 International Workers’ Day.

In a goodwill message issued in Asaba through his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, on Friday Guwor described workers as the foundation of nation-building and the key drivers of Nigeria’s economic, social, and democratic development.

Speaking in his capacity as Chairman of the Conference of Speakers, he commended workers across the country for their patriotism and resilience despite prevailing economic and social challenges.

He said state legislatures remain committed to labour-friendly laws, improved welfare packages, and reforms aimed at ensuring decent work conditions, fair wages, and safe workplaces for Nigerian workers.

Guwor said: “On behalf of my colleague Speakers in the 36 States, I reaffirm our collective resolve to use the instrument of law-making to protect the rights of workers, strengthen industrial harmony, and support policies that create jobs and expand opportunities for our people.”

He added that workers’ efforts continue to sustain critical sectors of the economy, including education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and governance.

Turning to Delta State, the Speaker praised the state workforce for their loyalty and dedication, saying they remain central to the implementation of government policies under the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

He noted that cooperation between the executive and legislature in the state has strengthened the delivery of welfare packages for workers.

Guwor urged workers to remain professional, disciplined, and productive, assuring that the State House of Assembly would continue to provide oversight to ensure proper implementation of budgetary provisions for workers’ welfare.

“Delta workers have shown uncommon dedication. From the Assembly Complex to every MDA, your contributions are powering meaningful development, opportunities for all, realistic reforms, and enhanced peace and security,” he said.

He assured workers that their welfare remains a priority, adding that a motivated workforce is essential for sustained development in the state.

The speaker also called on labour leaders to deepen dialogue with government at all levels, stressing that industrial harmony is key to sustainable development.

“As Chairman, Conference of Speakers, I appeal to organised labour to keep the doors of engagement open. The legislature remains your partner in progress,” he said.

Guwor wished Nigerian workers a peaceful and fulfilling Workers’ Day celebration.
