PDP faction rejects NEC meeting, interim NWC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership under Abdulrahman Mohammad has dismissed claims of a purported 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and the formation of an interim National Working Committee (NWC), describing both as illegitimate.
In a statement issued on Monday, the faction said it had taken note of assertions by a group led by Adolphus Wabara and Taminu Turaki regarding the convening of the meeting and the establishment of a caretaker leadership.
“The PDP wishes to categorically state that no such meeting was convened by the leadership of the party.
”Consequently, any resolutions, announcements, or claims emanating from that gathering are null, void, and of no effect,” the statement read.
The Mohammad-led faction, reportedly backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, criticised what it called contradictions among those behind the alleged meeting.
It noted that individuals who had previously opposed the idea of a caretaker committee were now claiming to have constituted one.
Raising legal objections, the group pointed to what it described as clear violations of statutory provisions, particularly the failure to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as required by law.
“Even if, for the sake of argument, they possessed the legal authority to convene such a meeting (which they do not), they have once again failed to comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026,” the statement added.
It further stated that the mandatory 21-day notice to INEC was not observed and that there was no evidence of the commission’s participation, rendering the actions invalid.
The faction also questioned Wabara’s role, citing internal disciplinary measures and arguing that he lacks the constitutional authority to assume leadership within the party.
It stressed that the Board of Trustees remains an advisory body without executive powers, dismissing its involvement in appointing an interim NWC.
Expressing concern over the role of some legal practitioners, the PDP urged regulatory bodies to review the conduct of those involved, particularly members of the senior bar.
Describing the situation as part of a recurring pattern, the faction said the alleged NEC meeting was another attempt to create confusion within the party and called on members and the public to disregard it.
“We therefore call on all party members, stakeholders, and the general public to completely disregard this illegitimate assembly and its outcomes.
”It has no constitutional basis, no legal standing, and no binding authority whatsoever,” the statement said.
It reaffirmed its commitment to party constitution and democratic principles under the leadership of Abdulrahman Mohammad and Samuel Anyanwu.
Meanwhile, the Wabara-led bloc had earlier announced the appointment of a 13-member interim National Working Committee, led by Turaki.
The decision was said to have been taken at a separate NEC meeting held at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
According to that faction, the move followed a Supreme Court judgment nullifying the Ibadan convention, which it argued created a leadership vacuum within the party.
