Abaribe, Umeh, Hanga switch parties in Senate shake-up

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday announced a fresh wave of defections in the upper chamber, marking another round of political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
Among the notable movements is Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who has once again changed political affiliation, this time leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Labour Party.
His latest switch comes only weeks after he previously defected to the ADC, underscoring what has become a rapidly shifting political landscape in the Senate.
In another development, Senator Victor Umeh formally notified the chamber of his departure from the ADC and his move to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Similarly, the Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate, Senator Rufai Hanga, announced his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), also joining the NDC.
The Senate session reflected broader political movement across both chambers of the National Assembly, as lawmakers continue to realign ahead of the next general elections.
At the House of Representatives, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas also confirmed a series of defections affecting multiple lawmakers.
A group of federal lawmakers, including Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande, and Munachim Umezuruike, moved from the ADC to the NDC.
Others who joined the movement included Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, and Abdulhakeem Ado.
In a separate political shift, Honourable Leke Abejide, who represents Yagba Federal Constituency in Kogi State, defected from the ADC to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
These developments continue to reshape party strength within the legislature, as politicians reposition themselves in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
