Okpebholo assures support for late journalist’s family

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has assured the family of late Independent Television and Radio (ITV) correspondent, Kingsley Uchegbu, of government support following his death.

Uchegbu, who served as Government House Correspondent for ITV and Radio, died on Wednesday after a brief illness.

Representing the governor during a condolence visit to the deceased’s residence in Benin on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, conveyed the government’s sympathy to the bereaved family.

Afegbua said the state government would stand by the widow and children of the late journalist and provide the necessary support to help them through the difficult period.

According to him, the government recognises the late Uchegbu’s dedication to duty and would not abandon his family.

“Madam, we are here on behalf of the governor, and we assure you that we will not leave you alone.

“We will be part of the process that will bring succour to you and your children,” he said.

The commissioner described the deceased as a committed and hardworking journalist whose humility and simplicity earned him admiration among colleagues and associates.

He noted that Uchegbu remained devoted to his duties despite the challenges associated with commuting long distances to work daily.

“The distance he covered daily to work showed his dedication and resilience,” Afegbua added.

He also encouraged the widow, Chineyeamara Uchegbu, to remain strong and focused on the wellbeing of her children despite the painful loss.

Speaking on behalf of the family, a church elder at Winners Chapel, Dr Magnus Oshiogwe, thanked the Edo State Government for the swift condolence visit.

Oshiogwe described the visit as a demonstration of honour and recognition for the late journalist’s service and contributions.

He stated that Uchegbu was an active member of the church and revealed that pastors and church leaders had visited the family shortly after news of his passing emerged.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) also mourned the late correspondent, describing his death as a major loss to the media industry and the union.

In a condolence message jointly signed by the state NUJ Chairman, Festus Alenkhe, and Secretary, Andy Egbon, the union said it received the news with sadness and shock.

According to the statement, Uchegbu was not only a committed staff member of ITV/Radio but also an active member of the NUJ known for his professionalism, humility and friendly nature.

“At moments like this, words are inadequate to express the grief and sadness in our hearts,” the statement read.

The union further noted that the deceased contributed significantly to journalism practice in Edo State and maintained cordial relationships with colleagues within and outside the profession.

The late Kingsley Uchegbu is survived by his wife, children and aged mother.
