Police bust child trafficking syndicate in A’Ibom

 

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has dismantled a child trafficking syndicate and arrested three suspects over the alleged conspiracy and illegal sale of a newborn baby in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfom John, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday in Uyo.

According to her, the suspects were arrested on Wednesday at about 7:00 p.m. following swift police action based on a complaint received by the command.

She said the complainant reported that his wife delivered a baby boy on May 7, but the newborn was shortly after birth allegedly sold to one of the suspects for N145,000.

“Upon receipt of the report, operatives immediately swung into action, leading to the arrest of the suspects and the successful recovery of the baby boy,” she said.

John added that the suspects had reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation, while investigations were ongoing to uncover and apprehend other members of the trafficking network.

She explained that efforts had been intensified to trace all individuals linked to the syndicate and ensure they are brought to justice.

The Police Command also reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-led policing and sustained operations against criminal activities across Akwa Ibom State.

Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, was quoted as reiterating the command’s resolve to curb human trafficking and protect vulnerable persons, especially children, in the state.

The statement assured residents that the police would continue to work to ensure the safety and security of lives and property.
