Police probe officer over viral threat video

The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the conduct of a police officer captured in a viral video making threatening remarks against members of the public who were recording police activities, describing the behaviour as unprofessional and contrary to the ethics of the Force.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Force said it had taken cognisance of the video involving ASP Newton Isokpehi, whose comments in the footage sparked widespread reactions on social media.
According to the police authorities, the officer’s actions and utterances do not reflect the standards, values and ongoing reform initiatives of the Nigeria Police Force, particularly efforts aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, professionalism and citizen-focused policing.
The statement, signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, stressed that the Force does not tolerate threats, intimidation, abuse of office or any behaviour capable of eroding public confidence in law enforcement institutions.
The police reiterated that citizens have the constitutional right to lawfully record police officers while carrying out their official duties, provided such recordings do not obstruct operations, compromise safety or interfere with lawful police activities.
The statement noted that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has consistently maintained this position as part of the Force’s broader commitment to accountability and improved relations with the public.
“In line with this position, the officer involved has since been identified and summoned to the Anambra State Command Headquarters where immediate disciplinary procedures have commenced,” the statement read.
The Force further described public recording of police activities as a legitimate tool for accountability and transparency, insisting that such actions should not attract harassment or intimidation from officers on duty.
Police authorities assured Nigerians that a formal statement detailing the outcome of the disciplinary measures against the officer would be made public after the conclusion of investigations and internal procedures.
The Force also appreciated members of the public for their continued partnership and constructive engagement in promoting accountability, professionalism and improved policing standards across the country.
The incident has continued to generate debate on social media, with many Nigerians calling for stricter enforcement of professional conduct among security personnel and greater protection of citizens’ rights during interactions with law enforcement officers.
