The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has approved the elevation of 68 legal practitioners to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
The decision was reached during the committee’s 174th plenary session held on Thursday, under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
Those elevated comprised 67 advocates and one academic, Professor Nnamdi Obiareri, who was recognised under the academic category.
Among the newly appointed Senior Advocates are former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) spokesperson Habeeb Lawal, former NBA Lagos chairman Alex Mouka, as well as Adetunji Adedoyin-Adeniyi, Mustapha Ajenifuja, Agba Eimunjeze, Olawale Fapohunda and Olugbenga Ajala.
Four women also made the list, including Soibi Ovia, Igonikon Adekunle, Olujoke Aliu and Olamide Adekunle.
The LPPC said the successful candidates must participate in and complete a mandatory pre-swearing-in induction programme before the formal conferment of the rank.
The swearing-in ceremony for the 68 new Senior Advocates is scheduled to hold on Monday, October 12, 2026.
Ahead of the ceremony, the committee reminded the successful candidates of restrictions regarding publicity and congratulatory messages.
It advised the lawyers to avoid publishing or encouraging advertisements, goodwill messages or congratulatory notices relating to their nomination or conferment.
The LPPC warned that any violation of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Guidelines and the Rules of Professional Conduct could attract disciplinary action.
The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is one of the highest professional honours in the Nigerian legal profession and is awarded to lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional excellence in advocacy, legal practice or scholarship.
