NDC sets up primary selection committee

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has constituted a National Selection Committee as part of preparations for its forthcoming governorship and National Assembly primaries.
The party said the move was aimed at strengthening transparency, internal democracy and credibility in its candidate selection process ahead of the 2026 elections.
According to a statement issued by the National Secretary of the party, Barr. Ikenna Enekweizu, the committee was approved by the National Leader of the party following recommendations from the National Working Committee (NWC).
The committee is expected to examine and review reports submitted by the National Screening Committee and make final decisions regarding the screening outcomes of all aspirants seeking to contest under the platform of the party.
Leading the committee is Senator Moses Cleopas as chairman, while Barr Ikenna Enekweizu would serve as secretary.
Other members of the committee include Comrade Babatunde Ali, Alhaji Sidi Abdul Bomi, Alhaji Mohammed Bakin Zuwo, Dr. Danlami Arabs, Barrister Fredrick E. Owotorufa, Chief Teddy Obey and Chief Barnabas J. Ejisi.
Also appointed are Pastor Mrs. Adedayo Ekong, Yenusa Tanko, Dr. Moses Paul, Buba Galadima, H.E. Aminu Abdulsalam, Danladi Abdulhamid, Professor Udenta Udenta, Barrister Reuben Egwuaba, Dudu Mamman Manuga, Dr. Grace N. Onyekusiobi and Alhaji Shittu Mohammed.
The party appealed to aspirants, stakeholders and members to remain patient and cooperative, noting that the exercise is being conducted within a tight timeframe.
According to the statement, the process is intended to encourage consensus-building among aspirants while ensuring the emergence of widely accepted candidates through a credible and fair mechanism.
The NDC further explained that only aspirants successfully screened and cleared by both the National Screening Committee and the National Selection Committee would be eligible to purchase nomination forms.
The party added that where consensus arrangements fail, direct primaries would be conducted between May 28 and May 30, 2026, in line with established party guidelines.
The statement also disclosed that the National Selection Committee would be formally inaugurated on Monday, May 25, 2026, after which members are expected to commence deliberations immediately.
Reaffirming its commitment to reforms and internal democracy, the NDC said the process was designed to promote unity within the party and position it strongly for future electoral contests.
