Bayelsa launches commercial flights with Pioneer Airlines

Bayelsa State on Monday officially made its entry into Nigeria’s commercial aviation sector as Governor Douye Diri boarded the inaugural operational flight of Pioneer Airlines, where he was designated symbolic “Passenger 1A.”

The non-scheduled flight marked the formal commencement of operations by Pioneer Airlines, using an aircraft acquired by the Bayelsa State Government for regional commercial services.

The aircraft, an ATR 72-600, departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at about 11:10 a.m. after receiving clearance from air traffic control.

It arrived at the Bayelsa International Airport at about 12:15 p.m., completing a flight duration of approximately one hour and five minutes.

The flight was piloted by Captain M. Ibrahim, with First Officer Joyce serving as co-pilot.

Governor Diri was accompanied on the inaugural trip by former House of Representatives member Hon. Gabriel Onyenwife, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters I, High Chief Collins Cocodia, and other aides.

The launch is part of Bayelsa State’s partnership arrangement with Pioneer Airlines, aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and expanding the state’s transportation infrastructure.

Officials said the development is expected to boost economic activities, improve access to the state, and enhance internally generated revenue.

Speaking after the flight, Governor Diri expressed satisfaction with the airline’s operational performance, describing the initiative as a key step in repositioning Bayelsa economically and strategically.

The project is being viewed as a major infrastructure milestone under the Diri administration, designed to attract investment, promote tourism, and integrate Bayelsa more closely into Nigeria’s aviation network.
