Police warn against reprisal attacks nationwide

The Nigeria Police Force has cautioned members of the public against launching reprisal attacks on South African nationals, businesses, diplomatic missions and related interests in Nigeria following reported xenophobic violence against Nigerians in South Africa.
The warning comes amid rising public concern over the reported incidents, as well as fears that the situation could trigger retaliatory actions within the country.
According to the police, security and intelligence agencies have already reviewed developments following a Joint Intelligence Board meeting held on May 18, 2026, chaired by the National Security Adviser.
The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, said the Federal Government is engaging relevant authorities through diplomatic, intelligence and security channels aimed at resolving the issue peacefully.
He added that efforts are ongoing to ensure the protection of Nigerians both at home and abroad while preventing escalation of tensions.
While acknowledging public outrage over the reported attacks, the police stressed that citizens must not resort to self-help or take the law into their own hands.
The Force warned that reprisal attacks, violence, intimidation, destruction of property, hate speech or any actions capable of threatening public peace and national security are unlawful and will not be tolerated.
It further emphasised that Nigeria remains a country governed by the rule of law, where all persons legally residing within its territory—regardless of nationality—are entitled to protection.
The statement added that any attempt to target South African nationals, diplomatic facilities or businesses would be treated as a criminal offence and dealt with accordingly.
To prevent a breakdown of law and order, the police said enhanced security measures have been deployed across the country, particularly around critical national assets, foreign missions and other strategic locations.
“To forestall any breakdown of law and order, the Nigeria Police Force, working in collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies, has strengthened security measures and increased surveillance around critical national assets, foreign missions, and other strategic locations across the country,” the statement said.
The Force added that adequate personnel have been deployed nationwide to ensure the protection of lives and property.
The police also urged Nigerians to avoid spreading unverified or inflammatory information, especially on social media, warning that such content could heighten tensions and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace and stability, the Force assured citizens that it remains fully dedicated to protecting lives and property, maintaining public order and safeguarding national security.
It urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant while continuing their daily activities without fear.
