Defence Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Navy Modernisation

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening maritime security and expanding Nigeria’s blue economy through sustained investment in the Nigerian Navy.

He said government would continue to provide the resources, operational capabilities and enabling environment needed to develop a technologically advanced, well-coordinated and globally competitive naval force capable of protecting Nigeria’s maritime interests and surrounding regional waters.

The minister made the pledge while serving as Special Guest of Honour at the 70th Anniversary Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night, which marked the climax of activities celebrating seven decades of service by the Nigerian Navy.

According to a statement issued by the Minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, he emphasised the importance of innovation and the adoption of modern technology in responding to evolving security challenges.

He noted that future naval operations would increasingly depend on advanced surveillance systems, intelligence-driven capabilities, unmanned platforms, cyber defence tools and data-powered operational systems.

“The future of the Nigerian Navy lies in its ability to harness cutting-edge technology and strengthen collaboration with regional and international partners.

”A modern, technology-driven Navy will enhance maritime domain awareness and operational effectiveness and contribute significantly to collective security within the Gulf of Guinea and beyond,” he said.

He assured that the Federal Government would continue to strengthen the Navy’s operational capacity to safeguard Nigeria’s maritime assets, protect national interests and support broader economic development in line with its motto, Onward Together.

Commending the Navy on its 70-year history, the minister described the Service as a symbol of professionalism, discipline, organisational strength and resilience.

He also acknowledged the contributions of international partners in supporting maritime security and regional stability.

Highlighting the Navy’s economic role, he said its operations had contributed significantly to the growth of Nigeria’s blue economy by securing strategic sea lanes, offshore oil and gas installations, and other critical maritime infrastructure.

He added that the Service has remained central to efforts to combat piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing and other maritime crimes.

“The Nigerian Navy’s contributions extend beyond maritime security.

”Through its active participation in internal security operations and support to sister services and security agencies, it has played a vital role in maintaining peace, stability, and the secure environment necessary for economic growth and national development,” he stated.

The minister also congratulated officers and ratings honoured at the awards ceremony, including posthumous awardees, praising their courage, dedication and selfless service to the nation
