Nigeria Condemns Treatment of Citizens in South Africa

The Federal Government has expressed dissatisfaction over the treatment of Nigerian citizens in South Africa, citing cases of attacks, harassment, and intimidation.
Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Ojukwu said Nigeria is unhappy with the situation, especially given its historical support for South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle.
Speaking to State House correspondents, she said Nigerians were particularly concerned given Nigeria’s historic role in supporting South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle.
She argued that many Nigerians in South Africa are legitimate residents and rejected claims that affected individuals are mostly undocumented migrants.
Ojukwu also said the option of reciprocal measures remains under consideration, though any decision would require approval at the highest levels of government.
She confirmed that evacuation arrangements for Nigerians affected by recent violence and looting were ongoing, adding that documentation and screening processes were being coordinated between Nigerian and South African authorities.
The evacuation exercise is being handled alongside agencies such as the National Emergency Management Agency to support returnees upon arrival.
