Delta lawmaker Anyafulu hails democracy’s impact

The Member representing Oshimili South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Bridget Anyafulu, has called on Nigerians to uphold democratic values as the nation marks its Democracy Day.
In her Democracy Day message,
Anyafulu described June 12 as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the enduring will of Nigerians to determine their own destiny.
Anyafulu also Chairman, House Committee on Housing, Women Affair, Humanitarian Support Services and Girl Child Development, said the occasion provides an opportunity to celebrate the nation’s democratic journey and recommit to the ideals of justice, equity, and good governance.
According to her, Nigeria’s democratic experience has strengthened national unity, expanded political participation, and given citizens greater opportunities to influence governance.
She noted that despite challenges, democracy has remained the most reliable platform for protecting the rights and freedoms of the people.
“Democracy has given Nigerians a voice. It has strengthened our institutions and provided citizens the opportunity to shape government through peaceful and constitutional means,” she said.
The lawmaker stated that over the years, democratic governance has encouraged accountability, transparency, and responsiveness in public service.
She observed that elected leaders are now more directly answerable to the people, creating stronger bonds between government and citizens.
Anyafulu said the nation’s democratic progress has also promoted press freedom, civic engagement, and broader inclusion in decision-making processes.
“Today, more Nigerians are participating in governance than ever before. This is one of the greatest gains of democracy,” she stated.
Speaking on Delta State, the lawmaker said democracy has accelerated development through sustained investments in critical sectors.
She pointed to improvements in road infrastructure, healthcare delivery, educational facilities, youth empowerment, and economic development initiatives across the state.
According to her, democratic governance has enabled communities to attract projects and development through active representation and citizen engagement.
She commended Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori for sustaining developmental efforts aimed at improving the welfare of Deltans.
“The dividends of democracy are evident in our communities through ongoing infrastructure projects, educational advancement, healthcare improvements, and empowerment programmes,” she said.
Anyafulu noted that democracy has also opened doors for women and young people to contribute meaningfully to leadership and public service.
She described inclusive governance as one of the greatest achievements of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The lawmaker urged political leaders at all levels to place the interests of the people above personal and partisan considerations.
She stressed that the success of democracy depends on leadership built on integrity, accountability, and service.
“Democracy is not merely about elections. It is about delivering hope, opportunities, security, and development to the people,” she stated.
Anyafulu called on Nigerians to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and committed to strengthening democratic institutions.
She encouraged citizens to actively participate in governance and continue supporting efforts.
