FG Begins Trial of 58 Terrorism Suspects in Abuja

The Federal Government has commenced the mass trial of no fewer than 58 suspected terrorists before the Federal High Court in Abuja, in a major security-related judicial process involving multiple judges and coordinated prosecution teams.

The suspects were listed for trial on Monday before Justice Emeka Nwite, alongside proceedings scheduled across several courtrooms within the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court.

The trial, which is usually conducted at the Kainji detention facility in Niger State, was relocated to Abuja for the current sitting, allowing for expanded judicial coverage and simultaneous hearings.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, is leading the prosecution team, while the Director-General of the Legal Aid Council, Aliyu Abubakar, is coordinating defence representation for the accused persons.

A wide panel of judges is handling different aspects of the proceedings, including Justices Binta Nyako, Emeka Nwite, Musa Liman, James Omotosho, Obiora Egwuatu, and Ekerete Akpan, among others.

Court officials confirmed that the trial is expected to run for four days, with cases being heard concurrently in multiple courtrooms to speed up proceedings.

The mass trial is part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian government to prosecute individuals accused of terrorism-related offences and other security breaches across different parts of the country.

Further details are expected as the trial progresses over the coming days.
