Lagos Issues Flood Alert, Warns Residents of Heavy Rainfall, Flash Floods

The Lagos State Government has issued a flood alert warning residents of possible heavy rainfall, rising water levels, riverbank overflow, and flash floods expected between June 14 and June 21, 2026.

The warning was contained in a statement from the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, following a flood prediction update by the Federal Ministry of Environment.

According to the advisory, several parts of the state have been classified as “Critical Risk Areas” due to anticipated weather conditions.

The affected locations include Apapa, Badagry, Epe, Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, Lekki, Ojo, Orile-Agege, Surulere, Agege, Alimosho, and Kosofe.

Authorities advised residents in vulnerable communities to maintain flood watch, identify evacuation routes, and take steps to protect households at risk.

They also cautioned against settlement or trading activities in low-lying areas, drainage channels, and riverbanks prone to flooding.

Despite the warning, the state government assured residents that there is no cause for panic, noting that continuous drainage maintenance and clearing of waterways have helped reduce the impact of seasonal rainfall.

Officials said these preventive measures have so far helped the state avoid severe flooding since the beginning of the rainy season, and further interventions are ongoing to strengthen flood control efforts.
