Serena, Venus Earn Wimbledon Doubles Wildcard

Tennis fans are set for a nostalgic reunion at Wimbledon after Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams were handed a wildcard entry for the doubles competition at this year’s Championships, marking their return to the All England Club as a pair after four years away.
The wildcard announcement on Tuesday added a major storyline to the tournament, as the iconic American sisters prepare to compete once again on the grass courts where they built some of the most memorable moments of their careers.
Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion and seven-time Wimbledon singles winner, has also claimed six Wimbledon doubles titles alongside her sister, forming one of the most successful partnerships in tennis history.
Her sister, Venus Williams, has been a long-standing partner in those successes, with the duo widely regarded as one of the greatest doubles pairings the sport has ever seen.
The 44-year-old Serena recently returned to competitive action at the Queen’s Club Championships, where she partnered Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko in doubles.
However, that campaign ended early after Mboko sustained a knee injury that ruled her out of Wimbledon.
Serena is currently continuing her grass-court preparations ahead of the June 29 start of the Championships, competing in doubles at the Berlin Open alongside Karolina Muchova.
Her most recent Wimbledon appearance came in 2022, when she entered via a wildcard but suffered a first-round defeat to Harmony Tan.
Wildcards are typically reserved for players who do not meet direct qualification rankings but are invited due to past achievements, popularity, or returns from injury or retirement.
Serena’s earlier announcement that she was stepping away from tennis before making a comeback had already fuelled expectations that Wimbledon organisers would find a place for her in the draw.
The All England Club also confirmed wildcard entries in the men’s singles for three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka and former Wimbledon semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov, both of whom remain popular figures on tour.
Several high-profile names, including Matteo Berrettini, Dan Evans, Nick Kyrgios and Gaël Monfils, are still reportedly under consideration for remaining wildcard spots.
In the women’s draw, French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska received a singles wildcard, with additional places expected to be announced later this week.
British pair Katie Boulter and Heather Watson were also awarded a doubles wildcard entry, adding home interest to the tournament.
The return of Serena and Venus as a team is expected to be one of the standout attractions of this year’s Wimbledon, with anticipation building among fans eager to witness the legendary sisters share the court once again on one of tennis’ biggest stages.
