Police Arrest Suspect Over Toddler’s Death
A farming community in Agoti settlement, located in the Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State, has been thrown into mourning following the killing of an 18-month-old child in a disturbing incident that has shocked residents.
The toddler was reportedly found dead with severe injuries after being allegedly abducted from her family’s farm settlement by an unidentified attacker.
According to reports, the incident occurred a few days ago when an assailant allegedly entered the remote farming camp where the child lived with her parents and siblings.
During the attack, the suspect reportedly assaulted the child’s mother before taking away the toddler.
The victim’s father, Bright Kalu, appealed to the Ondo State Government, security agencies and human rights organisations to ensure that those responsible for the crime are identified and prosecuted.
Kalu, a farmer originally from Abia State, explained that he was working on another farmland away from the settlement when the tragedy occurred.
He said the child had been left in the care of her mother alongside three siblings at the family’s farm camp.
Recounting the events that followed, Kalu disclosed that he had briefly left the settlement to purchase food items from a nearby camp.
Upon his return, he found his wife in distress and learned that an unknown individual had allegedly invaded the camp and attacked her.
According to him, his wife managed to protect and secure the safety of three of their children during the incident.
However, their youngest child could not be located immediately after the attack.
The tragic discovery of the toddler’s body later deepened the family’s grief and sparked concern among residents of the farming settlement.
Confirming the incident, spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Abayomi Jimoh, said detectives had arrested a suspect in connection with the case.
He disclosed that investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing and establish whether other individuals were involved.
According to the police spokesman, the matter was first reported at the Olofin Police Station in Idanre before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Akure for a more detailed investigation.
Jimoh assured that law enforcement authorities would continue their inquiries and work towards ensuring justice in the case.
The incident has generated widespread concern among residents, with many calling for a thorough investigation and swift prosecution of anyone found culpable.
