Lagos Building Collapse Kills 2

Two people have died, while 16 others sustained varying injuries after a residential building collapsed in Alakija, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Thursday at Old Ojo Road, near Alakija Bus Stop, off the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Satellite Town.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the building was occupied by several residents when it suddenly gave way.

Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Controller General, Margaret Adeseye, said emergency officials received a distress call at 11:37 a.m.

She explained that firefighters from the Ijegun-Egba Fire Station arrived at the scene by 11:49 a.m. and immediately began rescue operations.

“The incident involves the collapse of a storey building, an existing residential structure occupied by multiple residents at the time of the incident,” Adeseye stated.

Rescue teams have continued searching through the debris for anyone who may still be trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

Although some eyewitnesses claimed several bodies were trapped, authorities said only two fatalities had been officially confirmed.

“Regrettably, two persons have been recovered dead,” Adeseye said.

She added, “Emergency responders remain on the scene, working tirelessly to ensure that all affected persons are accounted for and to safeguard the area.”

“Further updates will be communicated as rescue operations progress,” she said.

Several emergency agencies are participating in the operation to rescue victims and secure the area.

They include the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Navy, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said the incident has disrupted traffic along the corridor.

According to LASTMA, congestion has extended toward the Oluti area following the collapse.

“An excavator has been deployed to assist in the rescue of persons trapped within the collapsed structure,” the agency stated.

Traffic officials urged motorists to remain patient, obey traffic officers, and use alternative routes where necessary.

The Lagos incident is the second building collapse reported in Nigeria within 24 hours.

On Wednesday, one person died while three others were rescued after a building under construction collapsed along Odili Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The latest incident happened less than 48 hours after another building collapse in the Iwofe area of Rivers State.

The repeated collapses have renewed concerns about building safety standards and compliance with construction regulations.

Experts have frequently linked such incidents to poor workmanship, the use of substandard materials, and corruption that weakens regulatory enforcement.
