Sweden and Japan Advance After 1-1 Draw in Group F

Sweden secured their place in the World Cup Round of 32 after a hard-fought 1–1 draw with Japan, a result that also saw the Asian side progress from Group F.

Japan finished second in the group behind the Netherlands, while Sweden advanced as one of the best third-placed teams despite not winning the match.

The first half was a cautious affair, with both teams appearing content to manage the game cautiously, knowing a draw would likely be enough for qualification.

Japan broke the deadlock in the 56th minute through Celtic forward Daizen Maeda, who finished off a well-worked attacking move involving Ayase Ueda and Ritsu Doan, with Doan providing the final assist.

Sweden responded quickly, equalising seven minutes later through Anthony Elanga.

The Newcastle United winger cut in from the left and unleashed a powerful left-footed strike from outside the box to score his second goal in as many matches.

The match opened up in the closing stages as Sweden pushed for a winner.

Alexander Isak came close, testing Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, while Elanga was denied a second goal in stoppage time.

Isak also struck the crossbar from a corner as Sweden finished strongly.

Despite Sweden’s late pressure, Japan held on to secure second place in the group and set up a Round of 32 clash with five-time champions Brazil.

The result also confirmed Scotland’s elimination from contention for a best third-placed qualification spot.
