DNA Test Confirms Missing Journalist Pelumi Onifade

A DNA result presented to the Lagos Coroner Court has confirmed that an unidentified body is that of missing journalist Pelumi Onifade.

The Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre matched the remains to samples provided by his mother, Mrs Adebose Onifade.

Onifade went missing during the #EndSARS protests in October 2020 while covering events in Lagos.

His mother reportedly broke down in tears after the coroner confirmed receipt of the sealed DNA report.

Investigating Magistrate Temitope Oladele said the court received the report confirming the identity of the body.

The inquest stemmed from a death suit filed by Media Rights Agenda (MRA) and the Onifade family against the police and Lagos State Government.

The Federal High Court had earlier ordered an investigation into the journalist’s death and directed a coroner’s inquest.

Justice Ayokunle Olayinka Faji issued the ruling on July 19, 2024.

On May 22, 2026, the coroner ordered LASUTH to submit an autopsy report for a body labelled No. 1385 within 21 days.

The order followed an application by MRA counsel, Alimi Adamu.

LASUTH earlier reported that six bodies were autopsied on November 3, 2020, with DNA samples sent for identification.

When proceedings resumed on June 23, 2026, both parents of the late journalist were present in court.

Lawyers told the court that earlier orders had been served and requested guidance on compliance.

The coroner said she had not received a response from LASUTH but had a sealed DNA confirmation in her possession.

Magistrate Oladele noted that LASUTH appeared overwhelmed but expressed concern over delays in compliance.

Counsel for the family argued that repeated delays showed failure to fully comply with court directives.

He said police had continued to deny custody of the journalist, despite public concern over his disappearance.

The coroner warned that coercive measures could be used if necessary to enforce compliance.

She, however, ordered another administrative reminder to LASUTH and encouraged direct follow-up by the lawyers.

Oladele added that failure to comply would force the court to invoke its full powers.

The matter was adjourned to July 7, 2026 for further hearing.
