Lagos Govt. Reaffirms Commitment to Deliver 2,000 Housing Units

The Lagos State Government has restated its commitment to completing and delivering about 2,000 housing units across the state, particularly projects located in Abraham Adesanya and the Sangotedo axis of Ibeju-Lekki, before the end of the current administration’s tenure.

The Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, gave the assurance on Thursday during an inspection tour of ongoing housing developments, where he expressed satisfaction with the level of progress but urged contractors to accelerate work to meet agreed deadlines.

Akinderu-Fatai said the government was actively monitoring all housing projects to ensure timely completion, quality delivery, and value for public funds.

He explained that the projects are being implemented under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements designed to expand access to affordable housing for residents of the state.

According to him, four major housing schemes are currently under construction across Lagos, with a combined capacity of over 2,000 units.

“It is the intention of this government to ensure that these projects are completed as quickly as possible before the end of this administration,” he said.

The commissioner, however, raised concerns about the pace of work on some sites, noting that technical issues had been identified and would be addressed in collaboration with contractors.

“We are not completely satisfied with the current pace of work. We have noticed some technical issues which we will resolve with the contractors,” he said, adding that inspections would be intensified going forward.

He warned that the state government would not hesitate to sanction or replace contractors who fail to meet expectations, especially where funding has been provided but delivery remains slow.

Akinderu-Fatai also attributed delays in some projects to inflation and the rising cost of construction materials, which affected timelines and led to requests for cost reviews.

“These projects should have been completed about three years ago, but inflation and the increase in the prices of construction materials affected progress,” he said.

He reaffirmed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to expanding housing infrastructure and ensuring that ongoing projects are completed for the benefit of Lagos residents.
