Cable Theft Crackdown Gains Momentum in Delta

Authorities in Delta State have intensified efforts to curb infrastructure vandalism following the arrest of two suspected electric cable thieves in Ndokwa West Local Government Area.

The operation, carried out in Kwale by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with local vigilante groups, led to the recovery of stolen power cables along the Ibabu–Ugiliamai Road.

Security sources said the suspects were caught in the act dismantling electrical installations before attempting to flee on sighting the joint patrol team. They were later arrested after a brief pursuit.

The suspects, identified as 28-year-old Osakwe Sunday and 34-year-old Ekene Obocha, are currently in custody as investigations continue. One of them reportedly sustained injuries during the arrest and is receiving medical attention under police supervision.

The recovered cables have been retained as exhibits, while authorities say the crackdown reflects growing coordination between community security outfits and formal law enforcement agencies.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, through his Chief Press Secretary Sir Festus Ahon, commended the police for swift action and praised local vigilantes for supporting the operation, describing community involvement as crucial to protecting public assets.

He warned that attacks on infrastructure would not be tolerated, stressing that such acts undermine development and deprive communities of essential services.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, also reiterated the command’s commitment to sustained intelligence-led operations aimed at identifying and prosecuting vandals.

Residents were urged to continue providing timely information to security agencies as part of efforts to safeguard public infrastructure across the state.
