DR Congo Superfan Misses World Cup Visa Setback

Democratic Republic of Congo’s well-known superfan, Michel Kuka Mboladinga, missed his national team’s decisive FIFA World Cup fixture against Uzbekistan after failing to obtain a United States visa.
Mboladinga, popularly called “Lumumba Vea” for his distinctive tribute-inspired appearance, had earlier attended DR Congo’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia in Guadalajara but was unable to travel to Atlanta for the must-win match due to visa rejection.
The Congolese Ambassador to the United States, Kapinga Yvette Ngandu, had previously expressed optimism that he would be granted entry if DR Congo progressed further in the tournament, noting his passionate support for the national team.
Mboladinga rose to international attention during the Africa Cup of Nations, where he became known for his symbolic, motionless tributes to Patrice Lumumba and his vibrant national-colour outfits that echoed the country’s political heritage.
His dedication earned him national recognition, including a government-gifted jeep after returning from the continental tournament.
However, his World Cup journey was already affected by earlier travel restrictions linked to Ebola-related visa controls affecting visitors from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, complicating his ability to follow the team abroad.
Despite his absence, DR Congo continued their campaign in a high-stakes group-stage clash as attention remained on both their on-field performance and the visibility of their global fan culture.
