Nagelsmann quits as Germany coach after shock World Cup exit

Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as Germany head coach following the national team’s early and unexpected exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure after less than three years in charge.

The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed that the 38-year-old held decisive talks with officials on Thursday after Germany’s elimination by Paraguay in the Round of 32.

The discussions reportedly ended with Nagelsmann choosing to leave his post.
Germany’s campaign collapsed in dramatic fashion in Boston, where they lost to Paraguay on penalties after a 1-1 draw that stretched into extra time.

The defeat ended hopes of a deeper run in a tournament they had started with promise.

Nagelsmann had initially guided Germany to a strong group-stage performance, including a 7-1 demolition of debutants Curacao and a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast.

However, a 2-1 defeat to Ecuador left them level on points at the top of Group E, advancing only on goal difference before their knockout-stage exit.

Appointed in September 2023, Nagelsmann led Germany to the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2024, where they were narrowly beaten by eventual champions Spain.

Despite that progress, the World Cup setback ultimately sealed his departure.

In his final comments after the loss, Nagelsmann insisted he was not walking away in haste and hinted at his readiness to continue if retained.

“I am not someone who runs away,” he said. “This is not the first time this has happened, and there are some things about today that need to be changed.”

He added that his future depended on the DFB’s decision, stressing his willingness to remain if trusted to rebuild the team.

Meanwhile, reports from Sky Germany suggested former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp is open to taking over the role if approached.

Klopp, currently serving as Head of Global Soccer for the Red Bull group, is believed to have a contractual exit clause that could allow him to accept the national team job if negotiations progress.

The DFB is expected to begin its search for a new head coach in the coming days as Germany face the task of rebuilding ahead of future international competitions.
