Army opens new facilities in Port Harcourt

 

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned several infrastructure projects at the Headquarters, 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as part of activities marking the service’s 163rd anniversary celebration.

Shaibu said the newly completed facilities are designed to improve operational efficiency, enhance troop welfare, and reinforce the Nigerian Army’s “soldier-first” approach to personnel management.

The commissioning, held on Friday, is part of a series of events leading to the grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration scheduled for Monday, July 6, 2026.

The projects included a Command and Administrative Centre, a detention facility, 12 units of accommodation for senior and junior officers, and residential quarters for Regimental Sergeant Majors of the 656 Signal Regiment and Brigade.

A new Soldiers’ Club was also inaugurated.

According to the Army Chief, the facilities are intended to directly benefit personnel and their families by improving living conditions and supporting effective service delivery within the formation.

Shaibu commended the General Officer Commanding 6 Division and Land Component Commander of Operation Delta Safe, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, for his leadership and commitment to infrastructure development in the division.

He said the successful delivery of the projects reflected the Army’s ongoing effort to prioritise the welfare of its troops while strengthening its operational readiness across formations.

The COAS reiterated that the Nigerian Army remained committed to ensuring that the sacrifices of its personnel are matched with improved welfare, better infrastructure, and sustained institutional support.
