SERAP sues INEC over alleged N800bn FAAC diversion

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations that about N800 billion from Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) funds was diverted to finance political activities linked to the 2027 elections.

In the suit, SERAP is asking the court to compel INEC to investigate claims that governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) made monthly deductions from their FAAC allocations into a fund allegedly created to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

The rights group also wants INEC to obtain full disclosure from the governors and the APC on all campaign-related contributions, including the identities of donors and the sources of the funds.

Beyond the investigation, SERAP is seeking an order directing the electoral commission to strengthen enforcement of campaign finance regulations under Section 91 of the Electoral Act, particularly on political donations, spending limits and funding sources ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the organisation, the allegations raise serious concerns about transparency, accountability and the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process. It argued that the misuse of public resources for partisan activities, if established, would undermine public confidence and distort fair political competition.

SERAP maintained that Nigerians have the right to know who finances political parties and candidates, insisting that transparent political funding is essential to preventing corruption and undue influence in governance.

The group further accused INEC of failing to fully exercise its constitutional powers to monitor campaign financing and ensure compliance with electoral laws.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the case.
