Police arrest Asaba content creator over rape allegation

The Delta State Police Command has arrested popular Asaba-based content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, also known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over allegations of rape involving a 20-year-old woman who later died.
According to the police, the arrest followed a petition alleging that the deceased travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after she was invited by Ogbonna, who had reportedly offered to train her in content creation through a programme advertised on his social media platforms.
The command said the suspect allegedly accommodated the young woman in a hotel where the alleged incident occurred.
Police authorities added that the woman later returned to her family home in a distressed condition and narrated what she claimed had happened to her.
The police further stated that before her death, the woman recorded a video in which she allegedly recounted her experience and the emotional trauma she suffered following the reported assault.
According to the command, the woman later took a toxic substance in an apparent suicide attempt and eventually died despite efforts to save her life.
Confirming the arrest, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the allegations after receiving the petition.
Edafe said police operatives attached to the Area Command, Effurun, commenced investigations following the directive, leading to the arrest of Ogbonna.
He added that during preliminary investigations, the suspect reportedly provided statements to the police, while further inquiries were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the case.
The police spokesperson quoted CP Oyeniyi as assuring the family of the deceased and members of the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated, with no part of the allegations ignored.
The command urged the public to allow due process to take its course as investigators continue efforts to uncover the facts surrounding the case.
