Akpabio announces N50m aid for Oriire victims

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has announced a N50 million support package for families affected by the recent abduction incident in Oriire Local Government Area of Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
Akpabio announced the donation during plenary on Wednesday, saying the intervention was aimed at supporting families who suffered losses during the incident.
According to the Senate President, N10 million would be given to each of the families of the three security personnel who lost their lives during the rescue operation, as well as the families of the two teachers who were killed.
He said the gesture formed part of the Senate’s response to the tragedy and a demonstration of support for those affected by the attack.
The Senate also called for increased assistance to bereaved families and urged security agencies to strengthen coordinated efforts to rescue other victims of kidnapping incidents across the country.
However, Senator Abdul Ningi, who raised a point of order during plenary, appealed to the Senate to ensure that support and compensation for victims of attacks were extended to all affected citizens.
Ningi argued that assistance should not be limited to specific categories of victims, stressing that every individual who suffered losses from such incidents deserved consideration.
The Oriire abduction incident had attracted national attention following the killing of three servicemen and two teachers during efforts to secure the release of kidnapped victims.
The Senate President’s intervention added to ongoing efforts by government authorities and stakeholders to provide relief to affected families while addressing the broader security challenges facing communities across the country.
