Anambra Court jails Onye Eze Jesus for six years

An Anambra State High Court has sentenced controversial spiritual figure Onyebuchi Okocha, popularly known as Onye Eze Jesus, to six years imprisonment and imposed a N20 million fine over offences linked to the violation of the state’s Homeland Security Law.

Justice Jude Obiora convicted the self-acclaimed prophet after finding him guilty under provisions of the law aimed at tackling activities considered threats to public safety and security.

The court ruled that individuals who claim to possess supernatural abilities to create wealth through prohibited means or prepare outlawed charms could face imprisonment and financial penalties.

The conviction followed the state government’s wider security operation targeting alleged ritual activities, fraudulent spiritual practices and the use of charms reportedly connected to criminal acts.

Onye Eze Jesus was among several traditional and spiritual figures arrested during the crackdown launched in February 2025 as part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s efforts to combat insecurity and dismantle criminal networks in the state.

Authorities said the enforcement of the Homeland Security Law is intended to discourage practices that exploit citizens through false claims and to prevent activities believed to encourage crime.

The judgment is expected to strengthen the government’s campaign against alleged fraudulent spiritual operations while reinforcing the state’s security measures.
