Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has directed all commercial tricycle and minibus operators across the state to register on the Ministry of Transport’s digital database as part of a new security initiative aimed at sanitising the public transport sector.
The governor said the exercise is designed to prevent criminals from disguising themselves as commercial transport operators to carry out unlawful activities, while also improving safety for commuters and visitors.
Speaking during the July edition of the Government House Monthly Prayer Service at the Latter House Chapel in Uyo, Eno warned that any operator who fails to register before the deadline would have his or her tricycle or minibus impounded by the authorities.
He explained that the registration exercise is free of charge and would enable passengers to easily identify the drivers of the commercial vehicles they board.
According to the governor, beginning in August, commuters will be able to verify the identity of every registered tricycle rider or minibus driver through the state’s digital transport database, strengthening accountability and public confidence in the transport system.
Eno noted that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to position Akwa Ibom as a leading tourism destination by ensuring that visitors and residents enjoy a safe and secure transportation network free from criminal infiltration.
The governor also announced plans to introduce free internet services at Victor Attah International Airport as part of his administration’s commitment to expanding digital infrastructure and improving public services across the state.
On environmental issues, Eno urged residents to stop dumping refuse into drainage channels, warning that such practices worsen flooding during heavy rainfall.
He said the government would review its flood control strategy while intensifying efforts to tackle environmental challenges.
He further directed strict compliance with the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise, stressing that movement during sanitation hours would no longer be tolerated.
Violators, he warned, would face prosecution under the state’s environmental laws.
Speaking on social welfare, the governor disclosed that the ongoing free food distribution programme across the state’s 31 local government areas is being implemented through the State Social Register to ensure assistance reaches vulnerable households.
He added that the Ministry of Economic Planning would soon commence an update of the register to include more eligible beneficiaries, allowing additional vulnerable residents to benefit from government intervention programmes.
Governor Eno thanked the people of Akwa Ibom for their continued support and prayers, saying their cooperation has contributed significantly to the peace, security and steady development being recorded across the state.
