Obi marks birthday with N10m hospital donation

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has donated N10 million to St. Raphael Hospital, Umueri, Anambra State, as part of activities marking his 65th birthday.

Obi, who presented the cheque during a visit to the medical facility, said the gesture was aimed at supporting efforts by the hospital’s management to improve healthcare delivery in the area.

The former governor stressed that healthcare and education remain the foundation of national development, noting that countries that prioritise investment in both sectors have recorded greater progress.

He said supporting health and education institutions has remained part of his personal commitment, recalling that during his tenure as Anambra governor, his administration partnered with religious organisations to strengthen healthcare facilities across the state.

Obi said some hospitals supported during his administration had grown significantly and expressed hope that St. Raphael Hospital and Maternity would eventually develop into a teaching hospital.

He praised the role of the church in providing essential services, saying religious organisations have often stepped in to fill gaps created by government shortcomings in key sectors.

The former governor also announced plans to embark on a weeklong support programme for health and educational institutions across Nigeria as part of his birthday celebration.

Meanwhile, former members of Obi’s Anambra State executive council and his former aides held a thanksgiving service at Madonna Assumpta Catholic Church, Agulu, to celebrate his life.

The group later visited a sickle cell home in Agulu, where they donated about N2 million to support residents and provide assistance to vulnerable members of the community.

The activities formed part of efforts to highlight Obi’s long-standing focus on healthcare, education and social welfare initiatives.
