The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has pledged to promote the Akwete weaving industry and announced a N2 billion intervention fund to support the revival of the indigenous textile sector in Abia State.
Tinubu made the commitment during her first visit to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Village in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State where she praised the craftsmanship and cultural significance of the locally produced fabric.
She said that if President Bola Tinubu secures a second term in the 2027 general election, she would proudly wear an Akwete buba and wrapper during a major national occasion as a way of showcasing the traditional textile to the world.
Describing Akwete fabric as unique, comfortable, and rich in cultural value, the First Lady said the material deserves greater recognition both within Nigeria and internationally.
She commended the women weavers for preserving a centuries-old tradition and passing the skill from one generation to another.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to embrace locally made fabrics, saying increased patronage of indigenous textiles would strengthen local businesses, protect cultural heritage, and create sustainable income opportunities for artisans.
She explained that her visit was aimed at engaging directly with the women and learning more about their work, rather than being a formal event.
The First Lady also acknowledged the efforts of Abia State Governor Alex Otti in supporting the growth of the Akwete textile industry, describing his commitment as encouraging.
Governor Otti, who spoke during the visit, said the state government recognises the potential of Akwete fabric and has been working since 2023 to improve the industry through innovation and better opportunities for weavers.
He described Akwete as a valuable cultural asset with the potential to contribute significantly to the state’s economy.
The governor also commended the economic policies of the Federal Government, while his wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, praised the First Lady’s empowerment initiatives targeting women, youths, and vulnerable groups.
The visit highlighted renewed efforts to preserve Akwete weaving heritage, empower artisans, and position Nigeria’s indigenous textile products for wider acceptance.
