Nigerian engineer creates braid-assist robot

 

A Nigerian-American engineer and Harvard University graduate, Yinka Ogunbiyi, has developed HaloBraid, a robotic innovation designed to transform the hair-braiding industry by assisting stylists and reducing the physical strain associated with repetitive braiding tasks.

The technology, described as the world’s first braid-assist robot, is built to support hairstylists by improving speed, efficiency and comfort during the braiding process.

HaloBraid is expected to help address some of the challenges faced by professional braiders, including long hours of repetitive hand movements that can lead to fatigue and physical stress.

The innovation has reportedly attracted strong investor confidence, securing $7 million in funding, while more than 7,000 salons have joined the waiting list to adopt the technology.

Ogunbiyi’s invention reflected the growing influence of robotics and automation in industries traditionally driven by human skill and craftsmanship.

By combining engineering with beauty services, HaloBraid aims to modernise salon operations while allowing stylists to focus on creativity, customer experience and specialised techniques.
