The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has inaugurated Caregivers Academy to enhance quality manpower, wellbeing and ensure safety of lives.
LASUTH Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabanmwo, at the inauguration on Wednesday in Lagos, said there was a huge gap for the services of caregivers both home and abroad.
According to him, LASUTH will offer a three month programme in caregiving in affiliation with John Academy UK.
Fabanmwo said that graduates of the Academy would have certificates from both institutions, adding that the training would enhance their employability.
He noted that professional caregivers were crucial in today’s world to address the needs of the aging population, special needs persons, family members or friends.
“Caregivers are not nursing assistants, or nursing aides nor are they trained to be alternative nurses.
“A lot of people with aged parents who can’t leave what they do for money are in dire need of the services of professionally trained caregivers,” Fabanwo said.
He said that the Academy was the sixth training institute established by the hospital in the past year to bridge the gap in the number of health personnel.
Fabamwo commended the management of the hospital for conceptualising the programme and giving opportunity to the students to productively contribute to the caregiving space.
Also, Dr Oluwatoni Adeyemi, Senior Special Assistant on Health to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, lauded LASUTH for the initiative, saying its worthy contribution to the healthcare ecosystem.
Adeyemi urged the students to be caring, compassionate, competent in their duty and worthy ambassadors of the institution.
