800 pigs die in major fire at Swiss pig farm

About 800 pigs have died in a major fire at a pig farm south of Lake Constance in Switzerland, police in the Swiss canton of St Gallen said on Thursday.

No people were injured in the accident in Gossau, which is around 40 kilometres south of the lake.

According to the police, around 90 mother pigs and 600 piglets were rescued.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated.

The fire brigade found two affected stables early on Wednesday evening.

A roof had collapsed on one of them and it was completely burnt out.

The fire brigade was able to prevent the flames from spreading to the second barn, but it was affected by heavy smoke.

The property damage was estimated at several hundred thousand Swiss francs.
