Do more to tackle insecurity, Reps tell military

The House of Representatives Committee on Defence on Wednesday commended the military on its efforts in the fight against insurgency and other security challenges in the country
Rep. Babajimi Benson, the Chairman House Committee on Defence, made the commendation when he led members of the committee on oversight visit to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
Benson, however, urged the military to redouble its efforts and re-strategise to be able to fully eliminate the undesirable elements terrorising Nigerians.
He said, as representatives of the people, members of the House of Representatives could tell authoritatively that Nigerians were yearning for results and an end to the myriad of security challenges in the country.
According to him, the House realises that these results can only be achieved at a cost, and through well-equipped, well-trained, well-resourced and adequately motivated Armed Forces.
“This is why we are here. Therefore, we expect that this interaction will help to address concerns raised by Nigerians whom we represent.
“And the role that the National Assembly can play to support you in addressing them”,he said.
He said that the House was fully behind President Bola Tinubu’s mandate to the Armed Forces of Nigeria to end all forms of insecurity in Nigeria, in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Benson expressed confidence that the mandate was achievable, adding that the people had suffered untold hardships and emotional pains in the last 15 years.
“As their representatives, we feel the impact of this hardship and witness the effect of insecurity on development within our constituencies.
” We must, therefore, work together by supporting the President to end the spate of wanton kidnappings, abductions, oil theft and preventable killings.”he said.
In his response, the Chief of Defense Staff(CDS), Gen Christopher Musa, said the military was doing everything possible to bring to address the present security challenges in the country.
He said that the present security situation was a phase in the life of the country, which would soon become a thing of the past.
He solicited the cooperation of all Nigerians to bring about lasting peace.
On the recent killing of soldiers in Delta, the CDS said that the military knew those behind the killing ,vowing they would be apprehended soon.
He added that the military had helped to improve the country’s daily oil production.
