Flooding: Delta govt reiterates commitment to extensive drainage channels evaluation

Isharo Odafe, Asaba

As part of efforts to actualize Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s promise to sustain a flood-free Delta, The Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, DSCTDA, has intensified flood control and waste management efforts with the removal of debris from drains within the capital territory.

The Director General of the agency, Mr Patrick Ukah, who addressed journalists while inspecting the first phase of the desilting exercise in Asaba, said the exercise was being carried out to allow free flow of rain water and curb flood challenges experienced in some part of the capital territory.

Some of the areas visited included TA Munoz Street, Hon. Justice Fred Oho Street, George Odiaka Street, FJ Street, and Sunny Areh Avenue.

Others inspected were Interbau roundabout, DBS Road, Waec Road, Madonna way, Transteel Road and Life and Power Street, amongst others.

He said that the agency had since begun the desilting of drainage channels to give room for efficient flood control management and cleaning of some blocked drainages within the capital territory, adding that the measures were part of the Agency’s avowed efforts to foster sustainable development and quality living environment in the state.

Ukah  also noted that despite efforts to ensure a safe and hygienic environment, many residents and business owners were still reckless on issues of proper waste disposal.

The DG therefore called for a change of attitude and urged residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drains as well as construction of makeshift structures on drainage setback and alignment, adding that any one that disobeyed the environmental laws of the state would face the wrath of the law.

He also said that the disrespect for environmental and urban planning laws by residents, commercial traders, hoteliers and business owners in the capital territory would no longer be tolerated.

Ukah added that the agency would not compromise on any act capable of defacing the beauty of the capital territory.

He  called on members of the press to assist in the development of the state by promoting sensitization campaigns to educate residents and business owners to clean and care of their environment.
