Tyla wins African music grammy again

South African singer Tyla has secured the Best African Music Performance award at the 68th Grammy Awards, held on February 1, 2026, in Los Angeles, reinforcing her growing influence on the global music scene.
The 24-year-old artiste won the category with her song Push 2 Start, earning her second Grammy in the African music category.
She first claimed the honour in 2024 with her breakout hit Water, making her the first musician to win the award twice since its introduction.
Her latest victory further cements her status as one of Africa’s most successful young pop exports. The award category, created in 2024, celebrates recordings that reflect Africa’s diverse musical heritage and contemporary sound.
Push 2 Start, a track from Tyla’s self-titled debut album released in 2024, gained international attention through strong streaming numbers and viral social media dance trends.
The song blends amapiano rhythms with pop and R&B influences, built around themes of confidence and romance that resonate with a wide audience.
This year’s contest was highly competitive, featuring leading African stars, particularly from Nigeria.
Nominees included Burna Boy for Love, Davido featuring Omah Lay on With You, Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid on Gimme Dat, and Eddy Kenzo alongside Mehran Matin with Hope & Love.
Beyond the award itself, Tyla’s win reflects a rapid rise that began in Johannesburg before she signed with an international label in 2021.
Since then, she has recorded major milestones, including a top-25 debut on the Billboard 200 and sustained global chart success.
The 2026 Grammy Awards also marked a significant moment for African music, as legendary Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti was honoured posthumously with a Lifetime Achievement Award, underscoring Africa’s enduring impact on global culture and sound.
