Officer, 6 soldiers killed In Borno blast

The Nigerian military has confirmed the death of a commanding officer and six other soldiers following an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in Monguno, Borno State, after troops successfully repelled an ആക്രമ from suspected terrorists.
In a statement released on Monday, the military disclosed that the incident occurred late on April 12, 2026, when troops of Sector 3 under the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI came under an isolated attack at the Charlie 13 location in Monguno.
According to the statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, soldiers engaged the insurgents in a fierce gun battle, ultimately forcing them to retreat while maintaining control of the area.
However, the situation took a tragic turn shortly after the encounter.
The commanding officer, who had advanced to the frontline to assess the aftermath of the clash, was killed when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device.
“Regrettably, the Commanding Officer, while courageously proceeding to the troops’ location to personally assess the situation, encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which severely affected his vehicle, leading to his death alongside six other gallant personnel,” the statement said.
The military noted that the officer’s actions reflected the highest standards of leadership, even after the immediate threat had been neutralised.
His decision to move toward his troops despite the risks was described as a demonstration of courage and dedication.
“His willingness to move towards the troops in the heat of the battle, despite the prevailing danger, stands as a profound testament to his valour, sense of duty, and unwavering commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of his men,” the statement added.
Operation HADIN KAI expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the fallen personnel as brave individuals who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.
“Their sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the grateful nation they served,” the statement further noted.
Despite the loss, the military assured that troops remain firmly in control of the location following the attack.
